Context

The prize honours one or more projects that use artificial intelligence, machine learning or algorithmic data processing to promote the foundations of our social, liberal and constitutional democracy or avert dangers to it. Analysing and linking different data sources holds great potential for new insights, but also for misuse and manipulation. Texts, photos, videos and voices generated by AI can be used to better communicate knowledge, but also to create misinformation. Free access to knowledge is one of the foundations of our democracy. But the manipulation of opinion and incitement to hate speach is one of its greatest dangers.

With our special "AI for Democracy" award, we want to support those who enable democratic participation and develop tools to protect democracy in the digital space or with the help of digital tools. The award-winning projects can, for example, show new ways of better involving citizens in political decision-making processes, of making elections more inclusive, safer and fairer, or increasing the transparency and traceability of political decisions. The "AI for Democracy" prize is intended to encourage people to make positive use of the potential of artificial intelligence and develop innovative solutions for the challenges of our time.

The prize is endowed with 2.500 euros and includes further support including great networking opportunities.

Eligibility

The competition is open to anyone regardless of nationality or place of residence. Individual applications are possible, group applications are preferred. Projects that are already being implemented in existing institutions and those that are currently being developed in new organisations are permitted.

Selection criteria and procedures

A jury evaluates the applications using the following questions, among others: How democratic or charitable is the project? How much potential is in the idea? How will the prize money be used? How likely is it that the project will be successfully implemented?

Award Ceremony

The prize will be awarded on Saturday, 21 September 2024, in Berlin and is handed over by German Federal Minister Klara Geywitz.
